We returned last month from a river cruise on the MS Nikolay Chernyshevsky (Vodahod Cruise & Travel) along the rivers, canals and lakes between St Petersburg and Moscow. Russia does not immediately come to mind as a holiday destination but we had friends who had been on this cruise some years ago, and whilst in Europe in May/June this year we decided to include the river cruise as part of our trip. Our inclusive trip from London was booked through Archers/Cosmos in the UK who we found most helpful and efficient and who we had travelled with on two previous occasions. Their prices are very competitive and also provide a free chauffeur pickup and return service within a 50 mile radius of your departing airport. In addition as we had booked early we were also given free a 'Moscow by night' optional tour.

The only downside is that we were informed that we would be picked up at 5.20am for a flight leaving Heathrow at 9.20am, and we were staying 30 mins away from the airport!! However by prior arrangement with the car service we were able to amend the pickup time. Archers recommended us to upgrade our cabin from the porthole cabins on the lower deck as not only are they tiny, but access is difficult down steep steps. We upgraded to a twin cabin on the middle deck which also had its own opening window. I have read others' reviews of this cruise and I appreciate the varying points of view. For me, the 12 day cruise between Moscow and St Petersburg was excellent.

I booked via Regent Holidays who are specialists in the region. They were very professional and helpful. My trip was very well organised by Regent including the handover to the Russian agent Vodohod.

Our ship the Zosima Shashkov is not a new boat, but has been refitted to a good standard. It is NOT a luxury boat - it has been described as 3-star and I think this is fair. Some passengers complained about the standard of the boat, but we hadn't paid 5-star prices. The boat's interior is pleasant and the public areas attractive, comfortable and afforded panoramic views of the waterways. There is a lounge-bar on board specialising in cocktails. The standard cabins are very small - so beware if you are a particularly tall or a large person, and the bathrooms are tiny with a small shower space.

There was always plenty of hot water on my cruise and a good water pressure for the shower. There is enough storage space in the cabin if you haven't brought too much stuff with you and if you are tidy, the space is sufficient, though the beds are narrow. I would recommend that ladies take a small hairdryer - you can borrow one, but its a nuisance to have to keep asking. A travel iron is a good idea too, if you have the space in your luggage. There is a little fridge in the cabins which is handy, plus A/C (a bit noisy) which can also heat the cabin if needed. So many cruise boats on the Volga/Baltic waterways but we fee that this boat was one of the best. No one we spoke to could fault it.

Akon discogs. Louis, Missouri, USA, so that he would not have to go through the immigration process, but he lived in Dakar, Senegal until the age of 7, split time between the US and Senegal until he was 15, then he moved permanently to Jersey City, New Jersey, USA. His second album, 'Konvicted', earned him a Grammy Award nomination of the single 'Smack That'. He rose to prominence in 2004 following the release of 'Locked Up”, the first single from his debut album 'Trouble'.

We booked through Audley Travel and had the cruise as the middle of our Russian holiday. The week on board passed so quickly with so much to do including Russian language, Russian history, cooking, the history of Russian fairytales - believe me, this was far more entertaining than you would imagine.

The stop off points were always interesting and very welcome although there was a point that the British could understand NABC, or not another bloody church! Saying that, I wouldnt have changed it for anything.

The staff, all of them, were so friendly and helpful I felt quite emotional at the end of the week and believe me, I have worked in the NHS for many years and try not to be too emotional! We arranged our own flights on Lufthansa, The planes were very clean, good leg room & the food the best we have ever had on aircraft.

Only drawback, all took off late.We flew BHX to Domodedovo airport south of Moscow. Avoid this if possible when cruising as it is a 100klm. Drive that took 2 hrs through a continual traffic jam even on 6 lane highways. I would never recommend self drive in Russia as the drivers are maniacs.

Our taxi driver managed to get us to the ship north of Moscow with skillful lane changing that kept us moving (just) most of the way. We joined the Lev Tolstoy for our river cruise up the Volga to St Petersburg & our junior suite was spacious & well appointed. Our inclusive itinerary gave us guided tours of Moscow by coach, Red Square & the Kremlin and lunch at the Hard Rock cafe. This was our first cruise & didn't know what to expect on the food front. No need to worry.
