Dibandingkan dengan Tabung Hampa, transistor mempunyai kelebihan antara lain bentuk fisiknya yang lebih kecil dan daya yang digunakan lebih kecil. Secara tipikal transistor mempunyai tiga kaki, yaitu: Basis, Emiter, dan Kolektor. Untuk menentukan kaki Basis, Emiter, dan Kolektor dari sebuah transistor biasanya digunakan multimeter. Transistor terbagi menjadi dua tipe yaitu PNP dan NPN.
